Fine lines are shallow lines that appear in the early stages of aging, while deep wrinkles are more pronounced creases formed over time. Both can be addressed through various treatments, including skincare products, medical procedures, and lifestyle changes.
The ageing of skin is a process that is comprised of gradual loss of tone and thickness, development of age sunspots, and changes in vascular system. All these conditions lead to changes in the appearance of the skin, sagginess, folds, and wrinkles.
There are two distinct causes of skin ageing:
- ageing caused by hereditary factors called intrinsic ageing
- ageing caused by environmental factors known as extrinsic
A very common example of the later factor is prolonged exposure to the sun radiation. Unfortunately, ageing by inheritance cannot be prevented; however, there are habits that make skin age faster and can be managed in order to substantially reduce the process of ageing. Preventable environmental factors that intensify intrinsic aging include sun exposure and smoking.
At the cellular and molecular level, aging is associated with senescence and the truncation of telomeres. Telomeres are the terminal portions of chromosomes in each cell cycle. Telomere shortening ultimately results in cell-cycle arrest or programmed cell death once a critical length is reached. At the histological level, photoaging is manifested as flattening of the dermal-epidermal junction resulting in decreased nutrient transfer between the layers. In addition, chronic inflammation, elongated and collapsed fibroblasts, disorganised collagen fibrils with overall decrease in collagen levels, and the accumulation of elastin are accounted for the skin aging.
Undesired changes in skin pigmentation are a major concern to many women and men. The darker spots arise from a disorder of specialised skin cells, melanocytes, responsible for the production of skin pigment. Hormonal stimulation, oral birth control pills, sun exposure, or taking some prescribed or over-the-counter drugs that cause photosensitivity are believed to be cause formation of darker skin spots, and generally described as hyperpigmentation. Some of the alterations in the skin pigmentation are hereditary, and some are due to hormonal changes like melasma. Pigmented skin can be seen as age spots, liver-brown pigmentation, freckles, sunburn, and posttraumatic pigmentation. The darker spots on the facial skin or neck, are difficult to treat.
Acne vulgaris is a term used for an eruptive disease of the skin. It is caused by an imbalance of sebum production and its depletion with associated inflammatory changes and infection are considered as the major ethology for acne.
Rosacea is a chronic skin condition described by facial inflammation, tenderness, blushing, and erythema. Rosacea can affect a wide spectrum of people with different genetic and ethnic backgrounds and skin types, but it is most commonly seen in Caucasians - especially those who have lighter skin, blonde hair and blue eyes and those who go red in the face easily. The exact cause or the age of rosacea onset in not clear.
In the skin, abnormalities in the wound-healing process may lead to delayed healing or excess fibrosis and scar formation. Scars are fibrous tissues that replace normal tissue at the site of injury. Minor scars ae usually flat and pale, with a trace of the original wound. Compared to other type of scars, they contain less collagen and connective tissue cells. In contrast, over healing results in excessive collagen deposition and the formation of keloids or hypertrophic scars.
Stretch marks are one of the most common and undesirable cosmetic defects of the skin. occurring when skin is overstretched and its elasticity cannot prevent deformation to the skin matrix. The most common occurrence of stretch marks is in women after pregnancy. During the pregnancy, the skin is pulled to accommodate the size of rapidly growing abdomen. In addition to pregnancy, rapid growth at puberty during a growth spurt or during weight gain may result in stretch marks.
The term cellulite refers to the dimpled appearance of the skin that appears on hips, thighs, and buttocks. The lumpiness of cellulite is caused by fat deposits that push and distort the connective tissues beneath skin, leading to the characteristic changes in the appearance of the skin. Cellulite is not related to the condition known as cellulitis, which is a spreading bacterial infection of the skin and tissues beneath the skin. Cellulite develops in the subcutaneous fat layers and gives the skin a dimpled or orange peel-like appearance. This layer of fat is structured into specific chambers surrounded by fibrous tissue implanting pressure on the underlying fat. At the result, cellulite becomes wavy and shows irregular or regular bumps and depressions. This condition can be very obvious once one tightens the buttocks or thigh muscles, the pelvic regions, lower limbs, and abdomen.
Surprisingly, 90% of post adolescent women develop cellulite at some time during their life. The causes of cellulite are inadequately understood. Hormones play a crucial role in the formation of cellulite.
